Tile-to-Colorbond conversion — why Blue Mountains homeowners choose it
Tile-to-metal conversion is one of the most common re-roofing scopes we complete across the Blue Mountains. Concrete tiles are heavy — a typical tile roof adds significant load to the roof structure — and over time the battens, rafters and wall plates carry that weight through decades of weather cycling. Switching to Colorbond reduces roof weight substantially, which can extend the life of the structure below. Colorbond performs well in mountain conditions: it doesn't absorb water, it sheds snow and frost cleanly, and modern Colorbond profiles have far better resistance to uplift than older corrugated iron. It eliminates the ridge pointing, valley blockage and tile-clip maintenance that tile roofs require. For homes in bushland-edge areas, the smooth metal surface also sheds embers and debris more effectively than tile. Tile replacement options
If you prefer to stay with tiles — or if a heritage setting requires it — we replace tile-for-tile with modern concrete tiles from leading manufacturers including Monier and Boral. Standard concrete profiles and Decramastic are both available. Terracotta replacement uses matching or compatible terracotta profiles where available; for heritage properties where matching the existing terracotta is important, we discuss options during the quote. All new tile installations include anti-condensation sarking, correctly graded battens and new ridge capping with flexible repointing.

Replacement costs depend on roof size, pitch, material choice, the condition of the existing batten and rafter framework, and gutter scope. Do I need a building permit for a roof replacement?
A like-for-like replacement is generally exempt development in NSW. Material changes may also be exempt for most properties, but heritage listings, conservation area rules and specific zoning conditions can create exceptions. What happens to the old roofing material?
We remove all old tiles, valley iron, sarking and flashings and cart them away as part of the standard scope. Old tiles and corrugated iron are taken to a licensed waste facility. Nothing is left on site.
