Why old cement mortar fails — and why flexible repointing is the fix
Traditional ridge cap pointing used a stiff cement mortar — the same material as the mortar bed. Over time, this mortar dries out and loses flexibility. As the roof expands and contracts with temperature change (and the Blue Mountains sees significant temperature swings between winter nights and summer afternoons), the rigid mortar cracks. Once cracked, water enters, the freeze-thaw cycle progressively widens the crack, and eventually the ridge cap can lift or slip entirely. Modern flexible polymer compounds — applied as the pointing layer over a sound mortar bed — remain elastomeric through the thermal cycling and significantly outlast the traditional cement approach. This is why we re-bed with mortar (for structural support) and repoint with flexible compound (for weather resistance). Patching over existing cracked mortar with more cement, or painting over it, provides at most a season or two of delay before the same failure repeats.
How ridge failure causes leaks
Ridge caps at the apex of the roof are the last line of defence against rain driven by the wind — water at this height on the roof can be driven up-slope in strong westerly conditions. When the pointing between ridge caps fails, even moderate rain can find its way under the cap and into the roof space. The water then travels along the underside of tiles or along battens and sarking before it drops through to the ceiling — often well away from the actual entry point, making the leak genuinely difficult to trace without going on the roof. Restoring ridge pointing isn't just cosmetic: it's a direct fix for a common category of Blue Mountains roof leaks.
How to spot early ridge cap failure before it causes a leak
Many Blue Mountains homeowners discover their ridge pointing has failed because water is already entering the ceiling — by which point the problem has been developing for months or longer. Ridge cap failure has visible warning signs that can often be spotted from the ground or from gutter level well before a leak begins. Look for: a visible zig-zag crack running along the pointing between caps — the first sign of cement mortar shrinkage; visible gaps where mortar has dropped out entirely between adjacent caps; caps that have tilted or shifted from their original seated position; and white powdery residue on the tile surface below the ridge line, which indicates water is washing minerals out of the mortar bed below. If any of these are visible, an inspection is worthwhile. Ridge re-bedding done before water has entered the roof space is a significantly simpler and less costly job than one done after ceiling damage has already occurred.

On-roof inspection
We inspect the full length of ridge and hip runs, assess the mortar bed and pointing condition, identify cracked or broken caps, and photograph the existing state before any work starts.

The job is quoted per lineal metre of ridge and hip re-bedding and repointing, with any cap replacements itemised separately. You receive a fixed price before work begins.

Old mortar removal
Existing cracked or failed cement mortar — both the bed and the pointing — is fully removed using angle grinders and chisels. Patching over failed mortar is not part of our process.

Cap inspection and replacement
As old mortar is removed, each ridge cap is inspected for cracks or breaks. Damaged caps are replaced with a matching profile before the new mortar bed is laid.

Re-bedding
Caps are re-seated on a fresh mortar bed at the correct height, alignment and cross-fall angle. The bed is allowed to cure to sufficient strength before pointing begins.

Flexible polymer repointing
The joint between adjacent ridge caps is pointed with a flexible polymer compound at the correct width and profile. Excess is tooled off, surfaces are cleaned, and the written warranty is provided on completion.

How do I know if my ridge caps need re-bedding or just repointing?
If the caps themselves are sitting correctly and only the pointing (the joint seal between caps) has failed, repointing alone may be sufficient. If the mortar bed — the thick bed of mortar that the cap sits on — has crumbled, cracked or pulled away from the tile below, the cap needs re-bedding before new pointing will hold. Our inspection identifies which situation you're in. Attempting to repoint over a failed bed is false economy.
Can you repoint just one section of the ridge?
Yes — if only part of the ridge has failed and the rest is sound, targeted repointing is more cost-effective than doing the full length. We assess the whole ridge during the inspection and quote only what needs doing.
Is ridge cap replacement different to repointing?
Yes. Repointing is renewing the mortar joint between existing ridge caps. Replacement means removing the cap itself (because it's cracked, broken or a non-standard profile) and installing a new one before repointing. We replace caps where needed and repoint the full run as part of the same job.
How long does polymer repointing last?
Quality flexible repointing compounds are rated by manufacturers for 10 years or more. In practice, upper-Mountains locations with significant frost cycling may see some surface weathering before that, while lower-Mountains areas in more sheltered positions can go longer. A periodic inspection and maintenance repoint of affected sections extends the overall life considerably.
Can ridge cap work be done while the rest of the roof stays in place?
Yes — re-bedding and repointing is carried out with the roof tiles in place below the ridge. Only the ridge and hip areas are disturbed; tiles further down the roof are not removed or affected. This makes ridge work a relatively self-contained job compared to a full restoration or replacement.
Is ridge repointing included when I book a full roof restoration?
Yes — re-bedding and flexible repointing of ridge and hip runs is a standard part of our roof restoration scope, not a separate add-on. Applying a protective coat over failed or crumbling mortar produces a poor result, so ridge work must be done before coating. Ridge repointing can also be completed as a stand-alone job when the rest of the roof is in good condition and only the ridges need attention.
